PitchxElsa Explanation

Description

So... this thing, practically an essay, has been lying around for some time. I just haven't gotten around to posting it. But now I think it's time XD. I've shown it to a lot of different people and it's been quite effective from their responses :D I just love this ship and I like to explain it to others when I can, because it seems there are quite a few who don't get it. And, well, I can't really blame them, I'll admit Pitch was an asshole in ROTG, and I myself didn't like him at first... but boy, has that changed XD, anyways, whenever I see people calling PitchxElsa "ew", stuff like that motivated me to write all this out. Because this ship is definitely very compelling and I'm not the only one who thinks so.

The beginnings of this pairing easily come down to, in its simplest reasoning, the quote from Rise of the Guardians, “What goes together better than cold and dark?”. We all know this line of course, and it’s easy not to think much of it, but it really is a great quote, because seriously, it couldn’t be more right. Not just on the surface level, but much deeper than that.  And that’s what got me, and others, to thinking. Wouldn’t Pitch and Elsa make an interesting pair? After all, the forces of fear and darkness play a strong role in Elsa’s story and because of Jack, Pitch deals with the powers of cold in Rise of the Guardians. The fact that he is the embodiment of fear and Elsa greatly struggles with this (the trolls did say fear would be her enemy) certainly makes this a match that would be interesting to see play out. There are endless possibilities to it, but that’s a matter of how much of an imagination you’ve got and how far you delve deep into these two characters.

The first assumption made by many, including myself, is that Pitch, just like with Jack Frost, would take account of  Elsa’s powers and take advantage of her vulnerability to act as her friend and manipulate Elsa for his own selfish reasons. And then, eventually, Elsa would discover the truth and turn on him, possibly even defeat him. But that’s only scratching the surface.

These two characters are a lot more complex than we realize, thus a rather complicated relationship. And they’ve got  quite a lot in common, as well. Elsa, like Pitch, has abilities that are powerful and seen as destructive.  They are both deemed as the monster/villain because of what they are, something that they can’t change about themselves- a creature of the dark and one of cold, easily misjudged by people. After all, people don’t like what they don’t understand, and both Pitch and Elsa are the epitome of that (not to mention that’s why the world fears them). And they are cast out by society because of this. Both spend years in isolation because of the world’s perceptions of them. Surely, because of the frightening resemblance, Pitch may see himself in her- a fearful and lonely person. He may show empathy toward her. Now, I thought even then, things would probably end badly because he is fear and fear is her enemy. But yet again, there is more to it.

It’s a little hasty to come to the conclusion that he’s completely evil. No one is, things aren’t so black and white like that. Before he became the Nightmare King, according to the Guardians of Childhood, he was a general in a time period called the Golden Ages. As some know, his name was Kozmotis Pitchiner and he had a family- wife Lady Pitchiner and daughter Emily Jane (Seraphina by the fandom?). His daughter meant the world to him, much like Elsa’s  love for Anna. They had a very strong, close relationship and he’d do anything to protect her. Even if that meant being away to fight an enemy known as the Fearlings. One day, when these Fearlings were captured, he volunteered to guard the prison. The only thing that kept him sane from the Fearlings and their temptation was a locket that had a photo of his child inside. Unfortunately, the Fearlings discovered his weakness and tricked him into believing that Emily Jane was trapped in the cell with them. He fell into a mad trance and ended up opening the door to try and save her. But of course she wasn't really in there. The Fearlings escaped and overtook Pitch, turning him into the Nightmare King. Not only did Pitch not choose to be evil, but what turned him into a villain was the fact that he was trying to save his daughter. Not so different from Elsa’s willingness to be seen as cold-hearted and even the bad guy in order to ensure Anna’s safety.

I genuinely believe Pitch would show true interest in Elsa, not only accepting her powers but the complexities of her personality. She, so similar, yet with more good still within her, could revive the man that Pitch once was, because there definitely is a spark left. It’s seen when Pitch admits his loneliness and longing for a connection later in Rise of the Guardians. Elsa has the maturity and understanding to look past his exterior and motivate him to be a better man. For example, still spread fear and darkness (because fear can be a good thing particularly when it teaches us to look before we leap and overcoming it helps us grow stronger while the dark helps us all appreciate the good in the world), but in moderation. And in turn Pitch could encourage Elsa to have more confidence in herself and what she is capable of, like him. Like I stated, it would be a complicated relationship, but it could work.

In closing, I have to say, one of the best parts of this pairing is the numerous amount of creations they could make together with their combined powers, whether it be simple objects, or something of a Gothic cathedral, or even as expansive as an entire empire. Really, there is so much creatively you can do with these two; it really requires some serious thought and a spark of imagination. Which is why I love it- and that wraps up why I ship PitchxElsa!
